IN THE BOOM

Machine Gun's Two "Thousands" (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) It is seldom that a pacer can be caught fit to win two different "thousand •pounders" m a few days. MACHINE GUN did it, however, and m will now be one of the big booms for future engagements. The son of Machine Brick had little to spare when he took his first "thousand" up north, and was placed m the Bale list at 600. No one wanted the pacer at that figure, .which was fortunate for his northern owner, as Machine Gun's share of the second "thousand" was £ 650. In that particular event, the Alexandra Handicap, Machine Gun went 4.30, with no great pace on the first mile. However, "N.Z. Truth" clocked Berry's charge to cover his last mile m 2.7 3/5 and those who saw Machine Gun outpace Ahuriri down the back the last time will hardly be surprised •to learn that the pace was on to such an extent. It is evident that Machine Gun can be ranked among the first -flighters on really firm going — the harder the nature of the track the better. Immediately after gathering m his second stake up north, orders went forth to withdraw Machine Gun from opening day at Addington, but he will probably be stripped for action later on at the 'Metropolitan meeting down south. . When he does line out, he should be worthy of respect.
