HUGHLS OF HANMLR

II 7HENEVER the good . people of VV Hanmer Springs — the Mecca of the nervy — require a gallon of oil, a new suit, a packet of cigarettes or a bottle of patent medicine, their first move is to "go to Hughes' place." For T. J. Hughes, merchant and good fellow, is proprietor and presiding genius of Hughes' Stores, a vast, wooden building wherein is stocked everything mortal man — or woman — can desire. His job is not a simple one. In addition to supplying farmers' homes with all they require, Hughes has to cater for the many and vai'ied tastes of the hordes of tourists who descend on Hanmer Springs during the year. ■ And the very "nice" people who visit this genial, bubbly region expect to find, a fully-equipped departmental •store m the wilderness. Still, if corporeal presence is a sign of prosperity, Hughes is doing very i nicely* thank you.
