TALARO'S DAB

Finishing Run Came Too Late

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) It seems only common -sense to argue that it is better to have two horses racing for a dividend than one. OOWBVER, those who placed their 1 confidence only in Talaro for the Spring Handicap Thousand last Saturday, feel convinced that if his bracketed companion, Tom Thumb, was out of the race, more use might have "been made of Talaro earlier. They consider that in the circumstances Talaro would have come home first instead of being placed third only. Talaro's effort was of a determined nature the last furlong, at which stage Machine Gun threatened real danger to Tom Thumb and eventually gained the verdict by three-quarters of a length. Matters looked all right for Tom Thumb to retain the lead prior to rounding the home turn, where there was nothing determined about Talaro's effort. When he did come along, it was made clear that he may have won had M. Holmes not taken things so easily as he did before the home stretch. The rush was delayed too late, but the finishing dab made by Talaro clearly instanced that the son of Great Audubon and Coin is one to be respected in some of the rich handicaps of the future.
