GOOD FILLY

Daphne De Oro Wins G.N. Derby

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) The bay filly known as Daphne de Oro would have been decidedly unfortunate had she missed the Great Northern Derby. VET there was the possibility of such ■*■ a happening even in the run home, for had it not been that an opening presented itself when Free Advice went into a tangle, Monopole, which eventually got second money, would have been returned the winoer. Punters had a great proposition presented them over this classic, for no fewer than three horses — including Daphne de Oro, Donard and Harvest Child — were bracketed, thus affording six opportunities of having a dividend returned. The bracketed trio finished first, third and fourth, Monopole separating them. Vestas, a good second favorite, displayed pace at one stage, but refused to move off kindly and maintained his reputation for being flighty from the barrier. There is some doubt about Daphne de Oro's breeding, for in the race-card she is mentioned as being by either Logan Pointer or Rey de Oro — Doraldina. She was back in the middle bunch early, but though small proved that she is good by her gameness in the final stages.
