SOUTHERN SIDELIGHTS

(By "The Toff.")

THE aged mare Antelope, by Great Audubon from the same dam as Avenger, has joined J. D. Smith's team at New Brighton. Antelope has done all her racing in the Auckland province, where she has failed to go as j fast with the colors up as she did in her track trials. * # # Avenger is putting a lot of dash into his work at New Brighton and, with an ounce of luck, he should soon pay a dividend. ■» * * J. N. Clarke has a pippin of a filly in Assett, whose future should be bright. She is very forward in condition and will be hard to beat. * * # Escapade was sent a couple of miles last week. She stuck to the trot all the way, going at a 2.20 speed. She went the reverse way of the track. The change suits her pretty well. * * # Mac Dillon's good work had to be stopped on account of him catching a cold. Some pacers can't even catch that. * # # Daphne Junr., a sister to Young Blake, is being tutored by J. Mechen at New Brighton. * * # Audacious is still on deck. The final work-outs might tell a tale. * * # Locanda Mac went sore a week ago, but it was nothing serious. He is pacing soundly and, on his trial this week, he will have to be considered during November. * # # Logan Chief is very perky, and in, a spin over two miles this week he was going comfortably at the end. The speed was increased over the last eight furlongs, which distance he compassed <n 2.13. * * # Great Bingen is better than ever he has been in his career, which means that the front markers on Cup day will have to be right on the job to stay in front of the champion till the finish. * * # Quite a number of enthusiasts have a sneaking regard for Pete Bingen. He is in good buckle, and is pacing with great determination. His work suggests that he is going to stay on better this year than he did last. ** • * - Cardinal Logan has yet to step up at Addington. So far all his essays have been done at home where the birds in the trees are singing home, sweet home in November. * # # Now don't get it into your head that Sea Pearl has no chance in the Cup. Please remember that! *# # - Black Admiral is doing 0.k., and : will be as fit as a fiddle for the Metropolitan function. * # # Kohara was responsible for two miles in a particularly attractive manner recently. He stayed on well, was full of fight at the finish and the time was good. * * # Don Derby is a high -class colt and everybody seems to know that he is. He is by Nelson Bingen from Francis Derby. * # * Master McGrath is a speedy pacer, but he is crazy. * * # Return Voyage, by Happy Voyage from Pearl Pointer, shapes well for a novice. * # * Acron's track efforts have not impressed his friends. He may improve before the meeting arrives. * * * Free Pointer is finding his speed, but he has lost his stamina. He never did have much. * * # A really good sort is Young Author. Be on him next time out. * * * Jacky Audubon is a nippy pauer with enough dash to put daylight between himself and a field. * # * Away threatens to break down. He was a little sore after a recent workout. • * * Bessie Logan has plenty of toe. She is a good one to follow. AUCKLAND CUP ENTRIES CO far as numbers are concerned, the ■ principal events figuring on the A.R.C. summer programme have filled particularly well, but there is the usual amount of rough stuff entered for the Auckland Cup. Three-year-olds claiming engagement include Ark Royal, Great Charter, In the Shade, Merry Mint, Star God and others. ## , # TT would seem Wild Pigeon is going to be led in a winner by Capt. Gage Williams sooner or later.
