HANDICAPPING

Whose Assessment Is Nearest?

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) Never was the difference of opinion among handicappers evidenced more plainly than in the case of Delightment and 'Frisco Jack concerning their adjustments for the Waikato R.C and Waikato Hunt fixtures. THE handicaps were due to appear *- for both meetings on the same day, and concerning 'Frisco Jack it is hard to imagine that two experienced weight-adjusters could differ so vastly. For the Clarkin Steeplechase (about three miles), W. Russell gave Pendavies 11.4 and 'Frisco Jack 9.10, while for the Waikato Hunt Cup Steeples of the same distance Handicapper Macmanemin allotted Pendavies 11.4 and 'Frisco Jack 11.0. In the case of Delightment the difference of opinion was again most noticeable, but the distances were certainly different. However, taking Te Kara as a guide, that horse was allotted 9.4 and Delightment 7.6 by Russell in the mile and ahalf Waikato Cup, while for the Members' Memorial mile and a- quarter at Cambridge, Macmanemin assessed Te Kara at 9.6 and Delightment at 8.10. Many other instances could be quoted where the handicappers referred to were of two distinct minds regarding entrants for the Waikato fixtures. Keen racegoers up north are awaiting the future deeds of both 'Frisco Jack and Delightment, if only to settle arguments as to which handicapper had the best grip of the position. , There has certainly been quite a lot of comment in racing circles over the difference in the adjustments. W7ENDAY will -sufficiently improve with racing to catch a hack race Bhortly.
