HIS LONG SUIT
PUTTING two and two together has been Bernie Ashwin's long suit all his life. So industriously did he add, divide and subtract in his younger days that a benevolent Alma Mater bestowed a pat on his merry head and said: "You are one of my brightest sons, even unto the — nth. and M. Comm. degree." Naturally, it didn't take Bernie long to sum up the argument with Fritzy and during the war forming fours and fighting suited him well. He saw a good deal of service and made his weight felt in regimental Rugby teams. Back in N.Z. he dropped a gun for a hockey stick and as full-back for the Wellington club he used with powerful drives to send the ball sizzling along the greensward. . He has risen well in the service of his country and is now an inspector in the Treasury. Just what he inspects is not altogether clear to the layman, but it is certain that he inspects it with an eagle eye. For recreation these days he wields an agile tennis racquet to some purpose.
