THE MITCHELSON CUP WINNER

When Te Monanui Caught Ellerslie Punters Napping

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.)

fe Monanui's best distance appears to be a mile and a-half, for he has already won three £2000 events over this journey at Ellerslie.

HE also made two formidable bids — and captured some place-money each time — for the Wellington Cup. At two miles he has been placed third m the last two Auckland Cups, but is now well up m the poundage again and few win such an important handicap these days over 9st. Despite the fact that he was only fifth choice m the Mitchelson Cup, which he won for the second time last Saturday, his victory was well received. The public dearly love to witness the success of such a model racehorse. His Avondale Cup showing was not good enough, however, to cause his prospects to be assessed highly. The bad going that day and his weight m it troubled him sorely. He also came on a lot m the interim, though Trainer Jim O'Neill himself must have considered he still _ wanted work by galloping him half a' mile m,

52secs. on the morning of his Cup victory. He thrived on it all and when it came to racing on Saturday last his quality asserted itself and he won at the right end after Len. Morris had been at him eagerly m a handy position throughout. Te Monanui really caught most punters napping, but will still improve. Yet the fact that he will again rise m poundage must be taken into account for future events. Nothing can be put past such a true racehorse as Te Monanui. However, he has paid his way for the season by capturing 1300 soys. for first m the Mitchelson. Some of the others have the job before them to get that amount of money. Len. Morris was lucky m fluking i.he mount owing to Ellis not having recovered from the fall experienced at the Manawatu Hunt fixture on the previous Wednesday.
