PALM LEAF TO LIMERICK

New Zealand Horses Prominent At A.J.C. Race Carnival

(By Cable. — From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Sydney Representative.)

When one remembered that Limerick during the A.J.C carnival covered 51 furlongs it was little wonder he met defeat over two miles on the last day of the meeting.

•THE great son of Limond. probably 1 lost Saturday's Randwick Plate on the preceding Monday, when with 9.5 he was asked to plough through a veritable morass against the best handicappers m the land. Had H. A. Knight, like Pantheon's owners, not allowed his champion to contest the Metropolitan, there would probably have been a different story to tell m the Plate; but Pantheon was nice and fresh while the heavy racing executed by Limerick had taken its inward toll. There was no fault to be found with McCarten's handling of Limerick m the Plate. He was patient and had the last run at Pantheon, but over the final furlong Limerick rolled about like a drunken man and was shirking his task at the finish. If brought over ia the autumn he will have his chance to avenge the defeat and unless Knight is so avaricious the mighty son of Limond should have little difficulty m reversing the placings. While Limerick's defeat was a sad blow to the New Zealanders, Ridgemount came out of his shell m the Canonbury Stakes and scored m decisive ." manner over Gun Club and Adrians March. The Leightori colt had failed ingloriously m the Breeders' Plate, but as the race was run on a rain -soaked track, little notice was taken of the defeat. 1 Neagrle thought Ridgmourit the best of good things when it was firm. Parl, stable companion of Ridgmount, ran m the same race, but was unfancied.

Piuthair will return to the Dominion without tasting the fruits of victory.

She could not shape decently with 9.3 . m Saturday's Waverley Handicap. Battlement was another which fail-, ed to act up to expectations. He had many runs tout was not able to once fill a minor place. Penman showed improved form by running second to the Flying Whitta m the. Chester Handicap of 6 furlongs. Gteorge Young always had him m a handy position, but the distance was a trifle short. Having been specially reserved for the second steeplechase, Passin' Through was never at long odds and he soon had his backers out of trouble by spilling jockey Burt at the fifth fence. Jack Cameron is suffering from Pneumonia and was not aJble to see his gelding, Merry Mint, beat all but Sacedon m the Clibborn Stakes. The son of Catmint moved short and was not quite at his best. He looks like being a top-notch miler. Clarina has "been a washout. She was tried over all distances from a mile to 13 furlongs, but never once flattered her supporters. Wenzl Scholiums' Archery gelding, True Blood, effected a surprise win m Wednesday's Suburban Handicap of 1 mile. He was badly placed early, but finished brilliantly. Evidently a classy welter horse. A large batch of N.Z. horses will probably leave for home on Friday. ' Fred Jones has booked Limerick, Battlement, Arikiwai, Roscrea and Tariff, and P.P. Neagle will return with Royal Lineage and Penman. If T. Lloyd can secure accommodation, the sisters, Piuthair and Clarinda will also make the homeward trip.
