FORTUNE LOST

Jeff ercTs Team Lets Punters Down (Prom "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auck- ; land Rep.) Just what J. H. Jefferd's team cost punters on Mitchelson Cup day at Ellerslio would be hard to \ determine. OUT it must have been a tidy sum and D would go a long way towards relieving the distress caused by unemployment! The stable started four horses and through the medium of the totallsator alone no less than £7579 went to make up dividends on winners and seconds, less the percentage which was reaped for working expenses and taxes. Other thousands went m support of the tribe by stay-at-home punters, while ,m doubles alone ;thore was a rush to support Star Stranger last week. Joy King was not heavily supported In. the Shorts, being only eleventh m public favor. But Star Stranger, Knightlike and Star God were all solid favorites. The first-named pair were up fourth, but Star God never ran up to the promise he displayed m track efforts, which were good enough to expect more from him among a northern hack crowd. He will surely do better m the days to come. Star God is not framed on the same solid lines as his elder brother, Star Stranger, but he can be looked for to do a little better with experience. Each race should improve him — and that his people expect him to improve seems certain, seeing that they left him m the N.Z. Cup at the last payment.
