THAT NEW STIPENDIARY
When Coming Events Cast Their Shadows Before
At the present time there is a vacancy m the ranks of the stipendiary stewards consequent on the appointment of John McMahon to the Sydney position.
A PPLICATIONS are being called for r\ the job and there is every indication of a rush of would-be stipes. But with the racing of last week over there has entered on the scene another point of view. In January last, "N.Z. Truth" wrote about the possible appointment of a j new stipe and named as the likely man a well-known official m the racing world. Nothing came of that, however, but at Otaki last week there was a new stipe on the seene — oneß. Skipwitb, better known as a starter for several clubs. Skipwith has done some duty as stipe and it was to him that the Jan-uary-article m "Truth" alluded.
And now with a vacancy m the ranks and Ski pwith 'called .m to act m the breach, it looks very much like a case of coming events casting their shadows before. It is possible that Skipwith will get the position, but according to a wellknown man who is well versed m the inside doings of the Conference, it is not probable. Somebody has to get the job and it may as well be Skipwith as anybody else. He can be just as good a choppingblock for amateur stewards as was McMahon and as Wilson, Gordon and Curry are to-day.
