The World's Worst

THE world's dirtiest and dingiest y court-room is to be found m Christchurch. It is what is known locally as v the middle court- room and to * compare it with a barn is to offend ll the good name of barn. The place is positively unwhole- a some. Dirt and dust have become h ingrained m the wood; the alleged n curtains which hang on his wor- a ship's dais seem to have been cleaned m a life -time. One wobbly mace sticks up alongside his worship and cobwebs have been spun all about it. The brassware is filthy. Facing the s magistrate is a gallery which has j, been used for the storage of musty tomes. The show smells mildewy and looks about the worst architectural ti job ever done fifty years ago. It y can boast of only one bright spot — the sheen on the magisterial chair worn by magisterial trousers for goodness knows how many genera- p tions.
