It did not require an expert to note that Concliff was lacking the hardened condition necessary to pace two miles at his best when he stepped out to contest the Otahuhu Cup. VET m reality the 6-year-old chestnut son of Childwood-Barmaid made an impressive showing throughout and "was fourth at the close, being little further away than a length from the actual winner. As he was credited with no better than 4.33 1-5, his "mark" was not damaged by last Saturday's effort. Tompkinson had him on the fence behind the leaders most of the .journey. Had the horse himself not been chock-full of desire it is just possible he could easily have drifted further backward when the field swarmed round him at different stages. But Concliff has his heart m the right place and evidenced willingness to be m the fight for supremacy, even though "too pretty" to do himself justice. On that showing Concliff is evidently worthy of the boom which signalled the appearance of his name among Otahuhu Cup entries. It will certainly be surprising if Concliff fails to earn his purchase money. "N.Z. Truth" has no doubt about his being the goods, while it can be taken as certain that he will stay. In short, he will gather ln the boodle when Tompkinson says he has him fit to do so. Every race he has should note him more improved. .
