WITH some people racing Is a hobby, with others a good way of spending lots of money m the vain hope of making some more, but with Frederick D. McVay, it might' almost - be said, it is a life work. .'■■.'" For twelve years he has done nothing else but help to run the affairs of not only the Takapuria Jockey Club, but of practically every racing or-trot-ting club m Auckland province. The. name of MeVayVhas been a household on© for many years m racing circles ■ throughout the Dominion, Frederick's uncle, John McVay, being, at one time 7 president of the Napier Park Racing Club, a member of racing commissions, and a racing conference representative for Hawkes. Bay. ~ It might almost be said that racing is m the blood of the TVfcVays. -~ -■'.' With anything from 30 to 35 Saturdays a year taken up with his work at various meetings throughout the province, F.D. has little time to take an Interest m other forms of sport. The' fact, however, that he was a Rugby rep. for Hawkes Bay for "eight years, way back .m the "Oughtyoughts" keeps him still~yery keen on game, and when the pacing season slackens he seldom misses' an opportunity of attending- a football' match. Swimming' and rowing — being either m the water or; on it-^ — have always appealed to him too. - - \ • ' ■-
