IN THE RUNNING
NINE hours' sleep every night, no special dieting and an ordinary
"healthy human existence. That is the stuff of which athletes are made, according to Fred de Malmanche and' he should know, for, he has a great record m the athletic field to his credit. Fred, is known over a wide area of the Dominion for his prowess m the field, of. sport. A direct descendant of the original French settlers at. Akaroa—where he first- saw the light of day —he made sport his spare-time ' hobby almost from'the days he could toddle., A dashing wing three-quarter of the Athletic Football Club, Wellington, he more than won his laurels. No wonder, then, that when he moved to Dunedin. he should be identified as a member ok the famous Pirates Club. But for an unfortunate accident he would have gained his "rep." cap while m the south. Intensely interested m amateur athletics, Fred has, sat on the Welling^ ton and Canterbury centres of the N.Z.A.A.A., but mere sitting and talking, athletics /.was not the be-all and end-all of his .interest. He took the fleld x himself, and as a runn§rhe has a long list of successes and a heap of trophies. His greatest, achievement to .date was his brilliant victory m winning the famous international handicap at Masterton, when he downed the colors of Jack Ayres Oostcrlaak and J.. W. Bukes.
