WAITER WASTERS.

How an Award is Abused.

Work on Half-Holidays

And : Cruel the Casual ftr His "CMt."

During the', week "Truth" has been informed by several of the unionist members of the Cooks and Waiters Union that the half-holiday granted to all hotel workers by Parliament m December of last year is ,bein« jeopardised by certain of the tra.de; who. are not content witti "one man one job," but who, *on their half-holiday, take casual- jobs at ether hotels, and take the living; away from men who depend on out-, side work to make ends meet. Last week, for instance^ no less than three waiters, two from one large hotel, and one from its nearest conn petitbr, instead of .enjoying the HARD-FOUGHT-FOR HALFHOLIDAY, took advantage of their time off and! heat the casual waiters for extri* . dinners at another leading hotel. Tba Union is doubly indignant at such low-down practices. Already it has been very severe m insisting that employers should conform to their olh ligations under the Shops and Offices Act, and it is a pity that it does not act. m a like manner with these* scab wasters. ."Truth" recognises that legally the Union has no hoi'! over the crawlers, but the members of the Cooks and Waiters Union migifrt m cases like this take a les- ! sen from the- way m which . SCABS ARE TREATED m the mining and shearing e^mps m Australia. Worst of all about the "scabbing" is that the employers of the wasters referred to object to ■ tham using their \half-holidav to desn poil other legitimate out-of-worW^, . Now that the half-holiday is given* the Union arid the . "scabs 1 ' 'tea ought -to realise that m return fr-tj the inconvenience of the half-holiday,. the men who enjoy the rest shnuUi turn lip fresh next mornin> to iheiß own employment, and not soend thpir halE-holiday m tiring themselves out for the sake of "doing" their out-of-work mates for a paltry five bob.
