Sir,— l was pleased to notice that you commented on the practice of the cook from Government House competiiig for casual work" a-< gainst the workers who depend on that sort of work for • tbeir living i But you went scarcely far enough, sir.. Not only was the cbok from Government House engaged, but. the butler and three footmen also assisted at the recent naval ball. Thcie was also another Government servant engaged as\well. This latter is m possession of a messenger's billet m the Minister of Justice's Department, anfi has held the position for years. All these men were engaged m preference to many wr.it* rs who have followed casual work for ye-ars, and who have previously assisted at similar functions. The mat•ter was mentioned at laSt night's meeting of the Cooks' and Waittis' Union, and Ihe secretary was instructed to write to the lisad of' Hie Department on the 'suHect. ..
