A CHOW'S COURTESAN
Plays Up at Pahiatua.
The serenity which usually pervade^ the atmosphere of the Pahiatua Magistrate's Court was somewhat disturbed the other morning before and during the hearing of a charge against a local Chinese laundry-man for failing, to, support his child. The wife of the Celestial came, she remarked, to render her husband assistance m the way o£ interpreting his evidence. She commenced operations by loudly demanding a glass of water. As no particular notice was paid to her modest request she started to hurl maledictions at the head of Constable Cooper, and threatened to annihilate the warrior within the space of two' minutes. After a sharp bout of catc'h-as-catoh-can she was removed' from the Court building, which removal greatly eased the mind of the constable. She was not to be denied, however, and again attacked, this time Constable Tanner being : the object of her invective. Another wrestling match ensued, and it needed considerable effort on the constble!s part to remove the peace disturber from the building. Eyen when the case was being heard, she again invaded the court and threatened to take possession at the time her husband was giving- evidence m the box. That worthy endeavored to calm her ruffled feelings by making all sorts of facial grimaces, the pronounced and almost audible winks he bestowed upon her even arousing smiles from the legal fraternity. She was .removed by order of His Worship, but still persisted m maintaining her interest m her lord 1 and master by watching the proceedings at the door, which she kept slightly ajar.
