What may yet happen m New Zea- j land : A woman who wears a stufi- i ed bird m her hat is liable to a fine ! of from £5 to £10 by. a law recentlypassed by. the Legislature of Arkan-< sas. '. !
Reported that Mr H. H. Hayr, whoi visited Cliristchurch as a delegate from the Auckland Racing Club to gather information as to the working; of the totalisator by the Canterbury Jocke- Club, will report unfavourably on the Southern scheme. A very objectionable feature that struck Mr Hayr, and which he is positive would not be tolerated' for five minutes by the Auckland public, is the practice of ringing on investments after the race is run. No one of course suggests that anything m the shape of fraud is done by this, but, as the Auckland representative points out, it would be.very easy for such a thinf to be done, and therefore is highly objectionable. This would seem to indicate that there is no possibility of the A.R.C. adopting the Riccarton system.
