SHOCKING ASSAULT.
Girl-Child Tampered With.
A shocking case of a child beinj;tampered with is to han,d from Otchuhu, nine miles south of this city. It appears that on Tuesday night last a little . girl not six years oh* until September, was dispatched ?■- --bout dusk wd'th a note to Dr. Rossley. The child had not proceeded far when she was joined by a young man whom' she describes as clean shaven and having pimples on his face, and a sore on his lip. The man took the note from the child and read it, learning from it that her father was confined to his bed very ill.
,The man accompanied the child to Dr. Rowley's and waited 'outside while she went m, and then escorted her agaiin towards her home ; but before reaching there he induced her, by promising her lollies, to accompany him to a lonely part. It was dark by this time and after proceeding some distance the fellow lifted the child over a ditch and took her under some trees where he shockingly assaulted her. She struggled and kicked, and after he released'her she ran home crying and told her mother what had occurred.
The 1 police were connmunicated with and efforts made to apprehend the scoundrel. Examination of the child by Dr. Rowley proved that no seraous assault had been committed but her underclothing was torn and soiled. The police subsequently apprehended a young man but the child was unable to identify him and he was released. Detectives are pursuing inquiries, but up to time of writing no other arrest has been made.
