LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION

WELLINGTON BRANCH. A meeting of the Council of the League of Nations Union was held _at St. John’s room on Thursday evening. In the absence of the president. Dr Gibb, fine ohair was taken by Mr P. Fraser, M.P., and eight other members were present, apologies or explanations having been received from most of l the remaining as being out of town or indisposed. After the minutes had been confirmed a report was received from the sub-committee appointed to draw up an appeal to churches to become corporate members of tho union. The draft of the appeal was adopted, and arrangements made for it to be printed. A large number of interesting letters were read and dealt with, including some from other newly-formed branches both in New Zealand and in Australia. Correspondence was also received from tlie Dominion Council and from tho British League of Nations Union on several matters of important business. Ajs the Home Office is so far away, it was suggested that possibly students going to Europe, as for instance, Rhodes scholars, might act in some cases as representatives of the New Zealand Union a* meetings of the Home Union. One impprtant matter that was to come before the consultative committee of the British Union was tho formation of a Parliamentary committee of the League of Nations Union, and a similar idea had been put forth by the New Zealand Union at its last conference, though so far nothing definite had been done. A report was given of the work accomplished by the special women’s committee in holding meetings for women in the. afternoon at which new subscribers had been obtained, and appreciation of their work was expressed by the council. A lunaheon held at the Pioneer Club was also reported by Miss Kane, tho president of the club. A most encouraging report was given as to the suggestion for next year of forming a study carclo in connection with the League of Nations Union, and it is hoped to give further details shortly. Meanwhile any one who would like to join such a study circle is hereby invited to communicate with tho secretary, 62, Nevay road, Miramar. Other business was postponed to the next meeting in the early part of next year.
