BY CHRISTMAS
RAT ANA TEMPLE READ"* The erection of the Ratana Temple, at Wanganui, is going ahead very rapidly, and a commencement baa been, made with the roof. Tho fcpflding will he practically complete by Christinas, when about 5000 Maoris from all parts of the Dominion are expected at the spot. The temple is reported to be of very solid nature, and Ratana claims that there is no concrete building in the Dominion which can be compared with it. The walls are 15 inches thick, and all the concrete has been rammed into place by Maori lads. Heavy rafters mark the ceiling, and when the building is finished it will accommodate 1000 people. Ratana is very pleased with the progress of the building, which he thinks is the biggest undertaking ever made by the Maoris in the Dominion. The cost of the temple if erected by pakeha labour would nave been more than £10,000: constructed by the Maoris it will cost less than £3OOO, declares Moke. Ratana’s companion. The workmanship, he declares, will do credit to tho Maori race.
