DEATH OF CYCLIST

KNOCKED DOWN BY LORRY EVIDENCE AT INQUEST. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N., December 3. An adjourned inquiry into the circumstances of the death of Cyril Alfred Kretagher, 27, who died in Palmerston Hospital on July 24th consequent on injuries received through being knocked down by a motor-lorry while cycling on the Kimbolton road at Feiiding tho previous evening, was held this morning. Medical evidence was given to the effect that the deceased’s injuries were too severe to permit of an operation at the hospital. Arthulr John Me Elroy, machinery foreman for tlie Oroua County Council, driver of the lorry which struck the deceased, said that tlie vehicle carried two kerosene lamps, one on each side. He could see from a chain to a chain and a half in front of the lorry. The lights of a car coming towards him blinded him, and he pulled over further towards the correct side and felt a bump. Prior to that he had seen nothing on the road except the approaching car. He stopped the lorry and on investigating found the deceased badly injured, and also the bicycle badly damaged, with the lamp still burning. The coroner’s verdict was that deceased died through injuries received through being knocked down by a lorry driven by McElroy.
