BOOKMAKERS ON WATERFRONT ONE FINED £4O. Per Press Association. - LYTTELTON, December 1. James Fearon, of Woolston, was charged to-day with carrying on the business or occupation of bookmaker. The magistrate found Fearon guilty on two charges of laying “Tote” odds, and inflicted a fine of £2O on each charge. On four jother similar charges he was convicted and was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon wilhin twelve months. The charge of carrying on business as a bookmaker was withdrawn. Sergeant McHolm stated that bookmakers on the waterfront were “making it too hot.” There were about four bookmakers on the waterfront, and Fearon was the first to be caught. Fearon, - he would say, was quite respectable and honest.
