ROAD FATALITY
CAR PASSENGER KILLED CHARGE AGAINST DRIVER RETURNING FROM RACES Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, November 30. Before the magistrate, Henry Denham was charged to-day with killing David Forsyth and Evelyn Blanche Hildebrand by an unlawful act on November 6th. This was the sequel to a Riccarton road fatality on race day. Archibald W Selwood, a farmer, also a passenger in Denham’s car, gave evidence that he paid the accused 5s for his fare. The car went at a steady pace when it first left. Before reaching Coach Corner the witness “picked"’ that the driver had had a “spot” or two. In turning the corner the car went at a good speed on the wrong side, then skidded, and hit a post. The speed would be about 35 miles an hour. Detective Bickerdike said that, when arrested, the accused said, “I suppose I’ll get ten years for this.” Constable Patterson said he found a full bottle of whisky on the bottom of the car. The accused smelt strongly of liquor, and was much excited. The chief traffic inspector said the accused, Denham, held a private driver’s, but not a taxi-driver’s, license, a*d his vehicle was not licensed to plv for hire. Denham pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. Another witness said the accused went to the wrong side to pass a car going in the same direction.
