WHERE’S LEPER ISLAND?
(To the Editor, “N.Z. Times.”) Sir,—ln to-day’s paper, under the heading of “Beyond a joke.” you report the visit of the Harbour Board launch Arahine to Somes Island and Leper Island. Would you kindly amend the geographical knowledge of a lifelong resident and one-time yachtsman by informing him of the whereabouts in Wellington Harbour of Leper Island?—l am, etc., SEPTUAGENARIAN. November 26th, 1926. [Leper Island is the island lying almost true north of Somes Island. Several names have been applied to it, one which was familiar some years ago was Grandfather Island. Since a leper lived there some years ago, the name Leper Island has stuck to it. The proper Maori name of the island is Ngamokopuna, while tho cave on the island is named Pana-o-Kohungunu, The Maori names for Somes Island and Ward Island are Matin and Makaro respectively.]
