THE THIRD TRIAL

PEGGY’S SECOND WIN OUTSAILS OTHER BOATS IN LIGHT BREEZEI The third trial for the selection of the Wellington candidate for the Sanderß Cup was held last evening on a calm harbour, and a very slight breeze. It was just the weather to suit Peggy, and this boat registered an easy win. The course was from a point between the end of Clyde quay wharf and the end of the boat harbour wall across the harbour to the anchored steamer Raganoa, off Kaiwarra, and back to the starting line, this providing a dead run and a beat back. There was a usht south-easterly breeze blowing at the time, and all boats had spinnakers out with the fall of the last flag, Peggy crossing the linen a little ahead of Wellesley and All Black. There was not much between the yachts on the dead run to the buoy. When they passed Pipitea wharf Wellesley was slightly ahead of All Black, with Peggy a few yards behind, her skipper having difficulty at first to get the spinnaker to fall. All Black led Peggy and Wellesley in that order past Tborndon breastwork and then a race ensued for positions rounding the ship. Peggy was leading and All Black same up dangerously close, almost fouling, but missing by inches, Skipper Sterling PDoting Peggy round a yard ahead, with Wellesley a further yard from All Black. Then commenced the long beat home, the boats tacking to windward on the light course. Wellesley fell back and Peggy forged ahead, increasing her lead by getting into a slant of wind, although All Black picked up a bit by getting a bei %v lay up while on the starboard tack. The lead was increased as the wind dropped, and Peggy crossed the line'at 7.19 a very long way ahead of All Black, while Wollesley woe too far away for her time to bo registered.
