MINISTERIAL The Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Act-ing-Prime Minister, returned to Wellington by the ferry steamer yesterday. Mr L. Macintosh Ellis, Director of Forestry, has gone to Christchurch, Mr D. Jones, M.P.. returned from Wellington to Christchurch on Saturday. Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P.. returns to Wellington to-day by the Maheno, from Melbourne. Mr L. B. Beale, H.M, Trade Commissioner, returned to Wellington on Saturday. The Hon. A. S. Malcolm. M.L.C., who has been on a visit to Wellington, has returned South. The Hon. Sir James Allen was a nassenger from Wellington to Christchurch on the ferry steamer on Saturday. Mr Hugh J. Ward leaves for the South this evening, and will be a passenger by the Alaheno from Dunedin for Melbourne on Thursday. Sir Charles Stntham, Speaker of the House of Representatives, arrived in Christchurch from Wellington on Saturday. Commissioner Hay and Mrs Hav. of the Salvation Army, left for the North last night, aud during the next two weeks will conduct meetings in the Auckland provincial district. Following a lengthy holidav in New Zealand, Mrs J. Chapman has left Palmerston North for Geneva to rejoin her husband, who is attached to the League of Nations secretariat. Mrs Chapman was accompanied by her children. Mr R. F. Fortune. M.A.. formerly of Victoria University College, who was awarded a travelling scholarship bv th© New Zealand University, has been granted a bursary by Cambridge University to aid in his research studies, and itf now in residence in Emmanuel College, Cambridge. A statement was mad© at the Feeding Magistrate's Court by Mr R. M. Watson, S.M.. to tho effect that Air J. L. Stout, S.M., of Palmerston North, would, after December 9th, preside at sittings of the court in Fcilding. Mr Stout stated on Saturday that he had not yet received advice from the Department of Justice relative to the nature of the reconstruction of the magisterial districts, so that he could not state what alteraion was being made in regard to his present district. The death has occurred at Kaiapoi of Mr Walter Parnbam, a prominent citizen, of that town. The late Air Parnham was born in Kaiapoi in 18G4 and has lived there practically all his life. At one time he was deputyAiayor, and he has also served on the Borough Council for several terms. He was one of the original directors of the Kaiapoi Shipping and Trading Company, and was also chairman of the Waimakariri Harbour Board. Ho took a keen interest in rowing and was president of the Cure Boating Club for a long time, and he has been a member of the Kaiapoi Bowling Club since its inception. He is survived by his widow, two sons and three daughters. The funeral of the late Superintendent Mathieson took place on Friday at Invercargill, and was very largely attended. About 60 uniformed members of the police force were present, including Inspector Cameron (in charge), ex-Superiutendent Norwood, Inspector Bird (Invercargill) and Subinspector O’Halloran. A fire engine from the Dunedin City Brigade, under Superintendent Napier, was included in the vehicles following. The pall-bearers were Sergeants Gilligan, Dunlop. Turner, Boulton, Murray, and Hall. The services at the bouse and at the graveside were conducted bv the Rev. W. Trotter (Mornington Presbyterian Church, of which the deceased officer was an elder). The Rev. Dr Merrington assisted. The bnrial took place at the Southern Cemetery, the chief mourners being th© deceased’s brothers Senior - Sergeant Isaac Mathieson (Ashburton) and Alessr* James and John Mathieson.
