WEEK-END FIRES
HURRIED EXIT SEVERE BLAZE AT MARTON. Per Press Association.' PALMERSTON N., November 27. The fire brigade was called out to minor outbreaks of fire at 9.15 o’clock last night and this morning, making a total for this month of fifteen. The total damage has not been great. The number this month equals the total for September, October, and November of last year. GISBORNE, November 27. A cottage at the Wairoa Freezing Works was destroyed by fire this morning. The occupants, Mr and Mrs McMinn, made a hurried exit through the bedroom window. MARTON, November 27. A fire at Marton Junction at 10 o'clock last night destroyed the dwelling occupied by J. W. Neale, a boroi.gh employee. The husband was absent at the time, and the mother and three children asleep. A young girl awoke, and found the house in flames She roused her mother and the others, who made a hastv exit, saving nothing. Only the shell of the house remains The brigade saved the two houses adjoining. The contents of Neale’s house are insured in the Commercial office fyr £125, and the building, which is owned by the borough council, is insured in the State Office for £SOO. While the brigade was at . Neale’s house an outbreak was discovered in an empty shop in the main thoroughfare of Marton. When the brigade arrived at the latter place the flames had been subdued by the residents. The circumstances of the latter lire are very suspicious. The shop had been : unused for some time. Only slight i damage was done.
