TARIFF PROTECTION
TO HELP INDUSTRIES AND INCREASE ’ COUNTRY’S PROSPERITY. The necessity for increasing certain tariffs to enable a number of industries to become firmly established was stressed by Mr E. H. Marriner, president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation and Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, in addressing the annual meeting of the latter body. He expressed tne opinion that they would always have the importers fighting against the local manufacturer. If they beat the local manufacturer through price-cutting they would probably put prices up to compensate for the victory. ‘‘lt is a pity that those people who are howling against tariff protection, and yet call themselves good New Zealanders, do not cease howling for a time and spend a little while investigating the secondary industries of this country. We can safely say that only about 20 per cent, of the manufacturing industries are asking for extra protection, which they have a right to demand if the standard of living is to be maintained. We wish to emphasise that we must do our best to bring all the evidence we possibly can to put forward a strong case when the matter of tariff is being considered. If we allow this opportunity to pass it will be five or six years before the tariff will b* opened again.”
