SOME AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS RETURNED “BROKE”
ADVANTAGES OF AMATEURISM ARE NOT ALWAYS APPARENT By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. Australian and New Zealand Cable Association. (Received November 26, 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, November 25. The “Daily Express” gives prominence to a cable from its Melbourne correspondent, referring to the proposal to give a bonus to the Test cricketers, and quoting the assertion of some Australian cricketers, who have returned “broke,” and compare Hirst, who received Z3OOO from a “benefit,” with Ernie Jones, who is stated to be "working on the Adelaide wharves, and George Giffen, who is holding a minor job in the Post Office. The “Express,” in a footnote, says: “It is necessary to remember that the Australians come as amateurs, and are accorded all the privileges of the amateur status, whereas Hirst was a professional, and depended on the game for his livelihood.”
