BLUFF’S NEW WHARF USELESS FOR BIG SHIPS. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, November 23. Bluff’s new wharf, which to date has cost £50,000, jironnses to bo a white elephant. During a discussion it was stated that the depth at the end was only nine feet, ani that u rock shoal practically prevented big ships from berthing low'er down. in order to dredge the channel safe an expenditure of at least £IOO,OOO W’as required. A letter from Captain Sliarman, marine superintendent of the Shaw, Savill Company, stated that 99 per cent, of tlie shipmasters would condemn outright the new wharf. It might be useful for tying up the Bluff fishing fleet, but it was otherwise useless. The structure was a mad-brained idea, and a waste of money. Captain Lindsay, the harbourmaster, said that the structure would be of value in relieving the pressure on the old wharf at rush periods, as it would he very useful for small boats. The board decided to continue the work of dredging, and to have the channel to the new wharf and the entrance of tlie channel deepened.
