SENSATIONAL PRICES PAID FORTUNES FOR OLD MASTERS THE MICHELHAM COLLECTION By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright (Sydney "Sun" Cable.) (Received November 25, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, November 24. The sale of the late Lord Michelham's art treasures, which are said to have cost £1,000,000, drew buyers from all parts of the world. Sensational prices were paid at the first day’s auction, and the porcelains, antiquo furniture and tapestries realised £140,000. French furniture brought astonishing prices. A Louis Quinze secretaire was sold for 9750 guineas. In the tapestries, Sir Joseph Duveen paid 19,000 guineas for an eighteenth century Gobelins panel. Another Beauvais tapestry suite brought 15,500 guineas. At the second day’s sale 15 pictures realised 405,000 guineas. Two Bouchers panels were sold for 45,000 guineas, and Romney’s “Lady Hamilton as Ambassadress," 40,000 guineas. Other Romneys sold were: “Anne, Lady Delapole," 44,000 guineas; “Lady Elizabeth Forbes,” 23,000 guineas; “Cap-
tain Little’s Children,” 21,000 guineas.
Gainsborough’s “Miss Tatton,” realised 44,000 guineas; and “Master Heathcote,” 40,000 guineas. Raeburn’s “Mrs Robert Williamson” brought 23,500 guineas. Sir Joseph Duveen paid 74,000 guineas for Lawrence’s Portrait, “Mary Moulton Barrett, aux Elizabeth: Barrett Browning.”
