WOOL FOR CHINA
(To the Editor, “N.Z. Times.”) Sir, —The following is an extract from a letter I have recently received from North China. The writer is a British born and educated Chinese:— . . . From the foregoing figures you will see that it is cheaper for us to buy wool in London than New Zealand. In your statement you have omitted interest on capital outlay, and we do not think you have allowed enough for exchange fluctuations. In London we are turning over capital twice in each financial year on both imports, and exports. One way freight is always costly, but we minimise this by guaranteeing a certain amount of return freight, and usually manage to fill the ship. Wool also is a very small part of the pqtward cargo. . . . The writer goes on to show that with the adoption by foreign educated Chinese of European garments there is a tremendous market both present and future for material wool and wool mixtures, and he is of opinion that as things are at present it would pay very handsomely to grow wool in China for consumption in Chinn, The trouble appears to be the question of disposing of the carcase; the Chinese are not a mutton eating people, but if they can be induced to add mutton to their diet, even at hare cost, no other solution need be looked for.—l am, etc., MAJOR FARNKWEI. Nelson.
