LITTLE BIT OF OLD LONDON

A little bit of tile London of Dickens has changed hands in the sale by Lord Chesham of the Burlington Arcade. This arcade is a quaint glass-roofed passage 200 yards long, which connects Piccadilly with Burlington Gardens close to Bond street. Shops which have comparatively recently exchanged lattice- windows for platcglass open out of the arcade on either side. It has been a fashionable resort ever since 1318, when it was built on a then open space alongside Burlington House, whose owner. Lord George Cavendish, said it would “prevent people throwing things over his garden wall.” Picturesquely-dressed lieadles were long employed as watchmen at either end of the arcade, and two chairs they occupied are still to be seel) at the entrances. Some of the shop leases are running out, and the value of ihe site makes rebuilding Ouerations probable.
