UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES

BARMAN DISMISSED WITHOUT NOTICE HOTEL LICENSEE PROCEEDED AGAINST. • At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Mr R. T. Bailey proceeded against A. Gustofsen of the Post Office Hotel, for failing to allow a cook a full day’s holiday on full pay, also with dismissing a barman without notice. Mr S. Johnson appeared for the defendant. The circumstances connected with the dismissal were somewhat unusual, inasmuch that the worker’s wife was taken ill, and he had obtained leave of absence to takb her to the hospital, but he wss detained a while longer. Mr Riddell, S.M., stated that the circumstances justified the worker in 'remaining away longer than allowed, and gave judgment for £2, and costs 12s, and 10s in the other case.

Concerning the dismissal of the barman, Mr Bailey stated that the man had taken his wife hurriedly to a maternity hospital, and when he returned and explained matters to the licensee, the latter stated that he did not want to .carry the troubles of the barman’s, wire on his shoulders, and sacked him.
