MINISTERIAL The Minister for Internal Affair* (Hon. Mr Bollard) left last evening for Palmerston North. To-day he will accompany the Hon. E. Newman and Mr F. F. Hockly, M.P., to Flock House, and will return to Wellington to-morrow. The Minister for Health (Hon. Mr Young) will leave for Te Kuiti today, and will return to Wellington on Friday. Sir Francis Bell, who has been representing New Zealand at the Imperial Conference, is to sail for New Zealand on December 3rd, in the Corintbic, according to an A. and N.Z. cable received last night. Sir John Luke, M.P. for Wellington North, has left for the north. Mr W. Appleton, of Wellington, returned from a visit to Sydney yesterday. Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P. for Patea, is in Wellington on business connected with his electorate. Sir James Allen, who is at present in the south, will return to Wellington on Thursday morning. Mr L. Beale, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner, left Wellington and is on an official visit to Dunedin. The Rev. F. E. Harry, of the Vivian street Baptist Church, left by the Tahiti on a brief visit to Australia. Dr and' Mrs P. F. McEvedy have returned to Wellington by the Marama after two months in Australia. Mr J. M. Ilott arrived back in Wellington from a business trip to Sydney yesterday. Mr F. Campbell will represent the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association at the meeting of the Wellington District Railway Advisory Board early in December. The Hon. R. A. Wright, Minister for Education, is to formally open the Hew workshops at Mount Cook Technical College on the evening of December Bth. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister for Industries and Commerce, is to speak at the opening of the annual conference of the New Zealand Chamber •of Commerce this morning. Mr G. Tompkinson, a manufacturer from the famous carpet making town of Kidderminster, is at present in . ellington. He saw a good deal of service in the war, attaining high rank. Lieutenant P. de la M. Barcham, of D Company 4th Battalion, Wellington Regiment, has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Decoration. Mr W. Donovan, first assistant at the Dominion Laboratory, who has hehn on an extended tour of Canada, England, and the Continent, has returned to Wellington. Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., who judged horses at the Royal Show, goes to Picton to-day, thence to Nelson, where he will act in a similar capacity at the A. and P. Show. Mr H. Holenbergb, an accomplished Danish musician, is giving a lecture and pianoforte recital on “The Music of the Northlands” to the students of the Wellington Technical College on Friday afternoon. Mr W. Mill, of McLean and Gray, has been re-elected to represent the Wellington Builders’ and Contractors’ Industrial Union of Employers in the Wellington Manufacturers’ Arsocia{tion. r A passenger by the Marama from Sydney was Dr. Du Reitz, of Sweden, a professor of botany, who is visiting New Zealand and the South Sea Islands in connection with botanical work. A Press message from Auckland states that Mr J. M. Prentice, advisory expert to New Zealand .Broadcasting .Company, arrived by the Aorangi and will lecture and act in air- executive capacity to the company’s four New Zealand stations. Mr P. D. Barcham has resigned as the representative of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association to the Chamber of Commerce. Mr L. A. Brooks was elected in his place, and Mr Barcham was thanked for his past services. . A Press message from Auckland saya that Captain James Macfarlane is dead aged 97 years, who was one of the founders of the Union Steam Ship Company, and brought out from England the steamers Bruce, Taupo and Rotorua. Later he was for twelve years harbourmaster at Dunedin. Wellington Manufacturers’ Association yesterday decided to support the nomination of UTr Sutherland Ross, of Dunedin, as president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation for the ensuing year, and Mr H. Hudson os vice-president. Mr Ross will probably be visiting the Old Country next year, and it was felt that Mr Hudson would very ably fill his place during his absence. At the meeting of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association yesterday, Mr R. T. M. Edmonds was appointed whole-time secretary. Mr Edmonds was appointed part-time secretary in succession fo Mr A. F. Allen in November, 1922. Mr L. A. J. Lonergan, manager of Messrs A. Hatrick and Co., Ltd., i> a passenger by the R.M.S. Aorangi, for Vancouver. Mr Lonergan is going on an extended business trip to the United States. He will also represent the New Zealand motor trade at the Third World’s Motor Congress to be held in New York in January next. Prior to his departure from Wellington Mr Lonergan received many valuable gifts from the executive and staff of A. Hatrick and Co., Ltd. Mr Alexander Ferguson, whose death was reported from Christchurch, was for thirty-two years manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch. He was bom in 1849, in Scotland, and was educated at the Tain Academy. For three years he served in the British Linen Company’s Bank at Tain, Scotland, and later he removed to London, where he joined the staff of the Oriental Bank Corporation. Some years later Mr Ferguson had some experience in the world of commerce in Liverpool, but in 1873 he joined the staff of the National Bank of New Zealand in London. Four years after joining the bank, the late Mr Ferguson was transferred to New Zealand. and a year after his arrival in the Dominion he was appointed manager of the bank’s branch at Balclutha. Two years later be wa« transferred in a similar caparity t« Timaru. In 1885 the lafo Mr Fep. Itufon was appointed manager of th# bank in Christchurch and held thte position until bis retirement.
