NEARING COMPLETION

THORNDON SEA WALL RECLAMATION WORK PROCEEDING CONTRACTOR WELL AHEAD As already intimated at the Wellington Harbour Board several months ago the contract for the Thoradon sea wall—the key to the 70-acre reclamation scheme in the locality—is well ahead of contract time, although an extra length of wall has been added to the original contract. The contract price of the job was £320,754. The original length was determined at 3429 feet, but subsequently Another 450 feet were added to its length, making 3879 feet in all. The Wellington Harbour Board will utilise part of the reclaimed area for Storage sheds, roads, and approaches, and the extension of the reinforced concrete breastwork will form a deepwater berth for vessels on the_ north front of the reclamation* It will provide a convenient, berth for vessels discharging case oil. The breastwork, which will he a continuation of, that running along the northern front of the Waterloo quay reclamation, will ho about 45ft wide, and will, have a depth of water available alongside of 36ft at low water. Construction work in this direction is already in hand, and the length of the breastwork when completed will be about 3000 ft, which will five, together with the Waterloo quay reaatwork.' a total length of continuous berthage of approximately 4000 ft. The completion of this is, of course, work for tho future, as is also the soheme to erect a coal storage and handling plant at the northernmost part of the reclamation to front on to the breastwork, and to be connected with the railway system. Provision will also he mode for the discharge of coal directly into railway trucks or into bins, and for the storage of hunker coal as required.
