LOCAL CHINESE MISSION

MR LEUNG'S ADDRESSES Last Sunday Mr Y.' F. Leung, who has come from Canton to take the place of the Rev. E. Y. Lee, began his ministry in the Chinese Mission Church in Frederick street, in the presence of a very large congregation of his countrymen, many having to stand throughout the service. The Rev. F. B. Redgrave, the general secretary of the Board of Missions, 09 behalf of the Bishop of Wellington, instituted Mr Leuug. Mrs Sue Shen Ning and Messrs J. D. Kwoin and N. Y. Sui spoke, assuring their new missioner of the hearty support of the Chinese community. Mr Leung, who is a graduate of St. Paul’s College in Canton, received his theological training in the Union Theological Seminary of that city. He worked for some years in Japan among Chinese university students, and was about to be ordained when the grpat earthquake put an end to his work there. On 'Wednesday evening there was a social gathering to welcome the new missioner. Tho Bishop of Wellington J presided, and addi esses were also tven by the Consul (Mr Li), Mr Hsekson (secretary to the Consulate), Archdeaaon Johnson (the first superintendent of the mission), Canon Watson (the present superintendent). Rev. F. B. Redgrave (secretary and treasurer), Rev. W, Mawson (in charge of the Auckland Mission;, Mr Sue (Baptjst missioner), Mr 8. Webber (on pehalf of the teachers), Mr Nelson Gee (for the older scholars), Mr Wong poy (for the business community), and by Mr* Li on behalf of the Chinese women. Several speakers eulogised the fipe work done amongst the women and children by Mrs Wong, widow of the first missioner. Mr Leung, first in English and then in Cantonese, spoke eloquently of the great work done by Ilia predecessor (Mr Lee), and earnestly. asked for the prayers of all friends and attendants of the mission.
