LYALL BAY AFFAIRS
PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION MEETS OFFICE-BEARERS EJECTED. Mr J. H. Burgoyne-Thomas presided at the annual meeting of tho LyaU Bay Progressive Association held on Tuesday evening. KEEN INTEREST MANIFESTED The annual report stated that members had tbken as keen an interest as ever in matters pertaining to the welfare and improvement of their district, hut their efforts bad been' sadly hampered by lack of funds by the City Council, and any work which was not considered of vital importance had been shelved by the council for the time being. The committee recorded its appreciation of the continued interest taken by residents of Lyall Bay in the ac-' tivities of the association and of tbe liberal support'at ah’times given to its appeal for funds. “Deputations have waited upon the council during the year seeking improvements to tbe beach and the widening of Queen’s Drive from Coutts street, together with formation of the footpath to Freyberg street," stated the report. “In regard to beach improvements th« Reserves Committee stated that they had ho ptoney available, but would welcome an effort by the association to raise funds for the work. In regard to the widening of Queen’s Drive, tbe council, some three months ago, decided to proceed with this undertaking, but allowance was made only for a 30ft roadway instead of 40ft, with high and low level footpaths on aa<h side. Effort* were made through tbe Civic League and the Eastern Suburbs League to get the council to adhere to the original plan of a 40ft ro*dw#y. Owing mainly to th» activity of Mr A. C. B|ak e (vice-president) it is possible that the council will make this provision, the work being held up in the meantime, pending negotiations from the council to acquire certain properties which will require removal before the project of a 40ft roadway can be proceeded with. “The City Council, Harbour, and Hospital Boards elections will take place next April. The Civic League Council b*s unapimpiisl.v decided put forward a citizens’ ticket and n»pe»U for the active co-operation of alt its branch associations. Your association will be represented on the candidates’ selection committee by your two * delegates, and every effort will be made to secure tho return of the most suitable candidates, for *be management of the city’s affairs.” Office-bearers for the ensuing year were elected ns under:— President, Mr J.
