SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS
PLAYGROUND WANTED GOVERNMENT - SIONEY SOUGHT: For several years the Wellington South School Committee has been endeavouring to improve the school grounds, and £320 has .been raised by local effort for the purpose. Yesterday a deputation representing the school committee, introduced by Mr R. McKeen. M*,P., requested the Minister for Edufcation* to make a £ for £ subside on the money raised., Tho deputation pointed out that the condition of the school grounds had been becoming worse every winter, the action of the storm water upon the loose soil having made the site dangerous in places. Flans had been prepared to make the grounds“safer. ami these involved the construction of a series of steps at a cost of about £SOO. Tile deputation also referred to a scheme for laying out. additional playjpg space, and reference was made to the need for improved drainage. The whole work was estimated' to cost about £2OOO, and it was stated that it woul-l take about five years to complete the programme. The denotation applied for a £ for £ subsidy. on the money already raised. The Minister (the Hon. R. , A. Wright) said he thought the committee deserved (o be encouraged, uid lie would see what he could do to meet their wishes. He was ndt. sure how much money was available for the year for s the purposes o£ subsidising improvements to school giounds.
