EMPIRE FREE TRADE?

SIR ALFRED MOND’S ADVOCACY TARIFF COMMISSION SUGGESTED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received November 16, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, November 16. Sir Alfred Mond contributed to the Press during the week-end a striking article on Empire trade, in which he argued that, as a counterpoise to international trade combines in Europe, on the one hand, and the United States’ enormous economic resources on the other hand, it was most imperative that the Empire should be regarded as an economic unit. He advocated the immediate consideration of possible steps towards Empire free trade by an Imperial Tariff Commission. Sir Alfred’s article gives added significance to the fact that to-night he had dinner in private with Imperial Conference delegates. The company included Lord Reading, Lord Inchcape, Lord Ashfleld, Lord Colwyn, Lord Kylsant, Sir Robert Hadfield, Sir Frederick Lewis, Sir Harry McGowan, Sir Josiali Stamp, Sir William Berry, and Sir Robert Kinderslcy, all important men in the world of commerce, shipping, or banking.
