THEFT OF BOOTS
LABOURER GAOLED WOULD-BE SUICIDE FINED. Police cases were dealt with by Messrs G. Anyon and I. Salek, J.’sP., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday as under: Peter Butler, alias Clancey, a labourer, aged 54, pleaded guilty to the theft of a pair of boots, valued at £1 2s od, the property of the Economic Shoe .Store. Chief-Detective Ward said that Butler at tlie presept time was serving a sentence of fourteen days’ imprisonment for the theft of another pair of hoots on Thursdny last. His Worship sentenced the accused to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. ATTEMPTED suicide Following his discharge from the hospital, William Hopkins, aged; 34, appears before Mr E. Page, S.M., yesterday afternoon, pleading guilty to a charge of attempting to commit suicide at Wellington on October 31st last. Senior-Sergeant 1 Lander said that Hopkins, who was a seafaring man, had recently signed off his vessel in Wellington, and had taken a room in Vivian street. However, following a drinking bout, he had be en found in his room with, wounds in his wrist. The accused had been in hospital for some tittle time, and was dishbarged only yesterday morning; He had stated to the police that he had no intention of taking his life when in a normal condition, and attributed his . attempted suicide as the result of his drinking bout. Mr E. Page, S.M., convicted IR'P’’ kins, and ordered him to copne UP f° r sentence when called upon within twelve months, and to pay £8 15s expenses incurred at the rate of £1 per week. At tho Mount Cook Police Court yostei'day morning three first offenders for drnnkenness were fined 10s. Mr T. Coffman, J.P., presided at the sitting
