SECONDARY SCHOOL SPORTS SEVERAL RECORDS BROKEN FINE HURDLER FROM WAIRARAPA It is generally recognised that when secondary school youths clash on the field of sport that a polished exhibition of the sport is provided. And so it proved on Saturday, when the Wellington Secondary School Association conducted its annual athletic gathering, on Athletic Park, before an attendance of 3000 spectators. The track was slightly on the spongy side, but a fairly stiff southerly breeze assisted the winners greatly, especially in the sprint events. The elements were, generally speaking, conducive to good times being registered, and the. crowd was not disappointed in this connection for, in addition to a number of existing records being equalised, others were shattered completely. SOME OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES One of the outstanding features of the day’s sport was the performance of J. E. Hoimwood, who defeated the Wellington College champion (F. S. Ramson) in the 120yds hurdles event, and established a new record for the distance. A pretty style of jumper—one of the best seen on the local ground for many years—the Wairarapa youth out-jumped his most serious rival, and had to dive at the tape to get home first. Ramson was probably the most conspicuous and consistent performer, wtiming the high jump, 220 yards champ., and finishing second in both the hurdles and 100 yards events. R. Leech (St. Patrick’s College), and N. Goodson, of the same school, also acquitted themselves with distinction, the former carrying off the 440 yards,, half-mile and mile senior champs., and. creating a new record of 4.54 4-ssec—-which is 4 3-ssec better than It. Anderson’s (St. Patrick’s College) time put up in 1924—f0r the major distance. A: Lawson (Wellington) and G. Orme (Technical College)' shone in the junior events, while C* P. Scarfe was a prominent intermediate boy, and broke the record for the 120 yards hurdles champ., putting up the creditable time of 17 2-ssec. All the events were contested in true sportsmanlike fashion, and the racing was exceptionally keen. The officials are deserving of a special mead of praise for the manner in which they despatched and assembled the field, Mr T. W. (“Dorrie”) Leslie in particular demonstrating his efficiency as a starter. Wellington College, which tied with Wairarapa last year so far as championship points were concerned, this year scored an easy win. running up 58 1-3 points, and capturing the MeFvedv Shield and championship medals. Their most serious rival Was again Wairarapa, who scored 28$ points. The points gained by other schools engaged are as follows:—■ St. Patrick’s College 24 1-3 points,
iimiiiimimiiimiimiiiiiiiiimiiiimmiiii Technical College 13$ points, Scots College 10 points, and Wellesley College and Hutt Valley High School 5 points each. For convenience the following abbreviations have been used in the undermentioned prize list: Wellington College, WN ; St. Patrick’s College, SPC; Hutt Valley High School HV; Scots College S; Technical College T; Wairarapa High School WR; and Wellesley College WY.

Goodson and Ramson raced neck and neck over the final distance, but the former put forward a great last effort to get the decision by inches. Half-mile, Senior (Record, 2min 8 3-ssec, R. This event provided the race of the day, ■ and the hurdling of the winner was pretty to watch. Ramson was generally expected to register a win, especially in view of the fact that he won the fastest heat. Faster between the hurdles, however, he was outhurdled by the Wairarapa lad, who has the real Wilson style and flight. A great struggle between the pair, in which they went over the hurdles almost simultaneously-, ended in Holmwood flinging himself at the tape to win by inches. 220 Y’ards, Junior (Record 26sec, C. P.
