MINISTERIAL The Minister for Public Works rived at Beefton at noon. He inspected the flood damage at Wawheraiti en route from Greymouth. He received deputations and left for Westport to view the destroyed bridge at Larry’s Creek on the way, and also the damage in Inangahua and Buller Valleys.—P.A. Protessor W. Hewitson, who recently resigned from the staff of Knox College, left by the Maheno for Melbourne on Saturday. Father Hurley, who was formerly stationed at Buckle street, Wellington, but who has latterly been at Timaru, left Wellington on Saturday by th« Maunganui to take charge of St. Patrick’s parish, Sydney. A Press Association message from Danvijle (Illinois) states that “Uncle Joe” Cannon, ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, died, aged 90, in his home there. Joseph Gurney Cannon (“Uncle Joe’ ’) was born at Guildford, North Carolina, in 1836, and admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1858. He was a member of Congress, with short breaks, from 1873 to 1921, and Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1903 to 1911. He received 58 votes for the Presidential nomination at the Republican Convention in 1908. He was the doyen of the older American political group, and a perfect type of the American politician. Mr Hugh J. Ward, the well-known theatrical entrepreneur, will arrive in Wellington by the Ulimaroa to-mor-row. A function will be held in the afternoon at the Midland Hotel, at which the Mayor (Mr V. B. Norwood) who will preside, will welcome Mr Ward. Advantage will be taken of the occasion by the visitor to introduce a musical invention by Mr C. H. Davis, a New Zealander, now resident in Sydney. This invention, known as the resonator, is said to reproduce music by a new process and to have an important bearing on the science of acoustics.
