OBITUARY

'MR THOMAS CARMICHAEL Mr Thomas Carmichael, a wellknown resident, died at Lower Hutt on Monday. He had been for many years a prominent contractor. Born in Belfast,' he came to New Zealand in 1861, and was educated and learned hia calling at Christchurch, where he and his father, Mr Robert Carmichael, carried •on business for several years. ong the structures erected by the firm at Christchurch were the first ii-Shibition Building in 1882, the Opera, House in Tuam street, and many other nolle and private buildings. When the contract for the" Government Printing Office was secured by Messrs "Carmichael and Son,- the firm removed to Wellington. Mr Carmichael, senior, died many years ago,and Mr-Thomas Carmichael carried on -the of the firm.- Among other reminders of his activities are the New Zealand Government Life Insurance Building, the old General Post Office, tho offices of the Union Steamship Company, the premises of the D.1.C.. (subsequently destroyed by fire), the Harbour Board offices, tho Public Library, the Gear Company’s works at Petone, the additions to tho Wellington Meat Export Company’s works on Waterloo quay, and ■’he original electrical station in Harris street. The late Mr Oar micliael for some years took considerable interest in the social and clvto life of tho community. He was at one time president of - the Working Men’s Club, and fol- several years a member of the City Council. Oh one occasion ho stood for Parliament, but was defeated. Mr Carmichael, had been in very poor health for some' vbars, and his death was not unexpected He leaves vi widow and one son and five ' daughters—Mr Leonard Carmichael, auctioneer, Levin; Mrs! . Jeffries. Newtown; Mrs Gilbert, Karori; Mrs Perry,, Sydney ; Miss Elsie Carmichael, who left recently for Vancouver; and another daughter who is living in Australia.
