MUCH BRIGHTER PROSPECTS.
Speaking of the prospects of the butte*industrv. a well-known business man said :—tilts season's output {"f the North Island factory) had been sulci to the Imperial Government at the'tame price as last year—ls 7Jd per lb, f.o.b. New Zealand ports- During the, present season the company had to contend with greatly increased cbst of production, amounting in some cases to about 100 per cent. Fortunately tire advantages obtained through the amalgamation were such that the directors hoped to be able to ray out approximately the same figure as last year. Tho prospects for butter during the comiiur season were exceptionally bright, and it looked as if the. dairy farmers were at last to get a square deal. Sj far nothing- definite had been arrived at in this connection, although indirectly information' hr.d come to hand which pointed to th» assumption .that the Imperial authorities were prepared to offer the Nw Zealand producers tho prveent centre-Had price; in Great Britain, less the cost cf distribution. This would mean a return oi approximately 2s 3d per lb, f.o-b.—c3itainly a much better price than had ruled in tho past, but not a penny too high to recoup tho * /iry farmers for the high cost of producing butterfat at tho present tim»>.
