BIG IMPROVEMENT SCHEME. . A further stage in the proposed Whan* garei harbour improvement scheme tu reached 'ait the Harbour Board meeting when the board's consulting engineer (Mr Blair Mason) submitted estimates of cost of four distinct schemes for deepening the harbour from One Tree Point to Onerahi, Kioreroa, and Whangarei Town wharf, -with a berthage accommodation for big steamers at a cost, varying according to the width and "depth of the channel to be dredged, ranging from '.£150,480 for the major scheme to jE116,350 for a modified scheme. The main amount would include the dredging of a channel from One Tree Point to Onerahi 225 feet wide and 25 feet navigable depth, at lowwater; dredging and channel from Onerahi to Kioreroa 150 feet wide, 20 feet depth at low water; provision of a swinging basin at Kioreroa. with a retaining wall; concrete wharf and approaches 500 feet long from Kioreroa to Whangarei Town wharf iOO feet wide at the bottom, and 9 feet navigable depth at low water; purchase of a suction dredge. The foregoing are included in the .£150,480 scheme, which found considerable favour in tho discussion by members. Finally it was decided that a special meeting be called, when estimates hrd been thoroughly considered, to define which scheme the board would adopt to place before the ratepayers in connection with the loan proposals.
