THOSE FREE PASSES
"A DOCKER'S WAGE FOR M.P.'S." Apropos of the granting of free passes for legislators, the Dunedin "Star". remarks editorially : "The scandal does not lie so much in the, official plea for concessions as in. tho sordid necessity behind the request. • Ministere and members of Parliament should be made independent of the need of business favours. It is conceivable that some members of Parliament may at times, owing to tho burden of tho cost of living and the extra, burden of any subscriptions to all sorts of good causes, be confronted with the necessity for a hag of potatoes far more than a free steamer passage., Tlie Government should frankly impress upon the country that tho remuneration of their. legislators ro scandalously inadequate, and must forthwith be increased to such a standard as to place members of Parliament beyond the need of accepting favours, which thrust them willy-nilly into tho tittle-tattle of popular suspicion. If there m impropriety in the politician's acceptance of concessions, it is eoually shared by the people, who pay their Parliamentary workers a docker's wage."
