, The death is announced from Westport of Mr S. Oarlyon, father of Mr C. J. Oarlyon, of Featherston, The deceased, who was about 78 years of age, had been ailing lor soma, time past, and the> end was not unexpected. Ho was Wid known in the iSouth Wairarapa, having resided for many years in ieawierston, whore he was in charge of the x'olice station.

Mr JR.. Jones, the popular chief offi cer oil the Ulimaroa, met with a painful accident on board that vessel while at Hobart last week, his left foot being jammed under a bulwark door. The door was being lowered at the time and Mr Jones's foot slipped under it and was severely crushed. He is able, however, to go about his dutie.s.

Dr. T. Julian, Junior, F.R.C.S., M.C., Ch.B., has been appointed resident surgeon of tho Wairau Hospital.. There were four applicants. , Dr. Julian- had three and a half years' wax service, and was twelve months house surgeon at Duncdin Hospital.— Blenheim Press Association telegram.

Mr C. H. Jubb, a much-esteemed member of the head office staff of the Blackball Coal Coinx>any, Chrietchurch, died on, Friday night following an operation. Tho deceased arrived in •' New Zealand from Belfast some eight or nine years ago, and then joined the Blackball Co.'s staff. Aj one time he occupied the position of president of the North' Canterbury Coal Merchants' Association.

Mr William Webb, who was born in Auckland in 1843, died last week at Gisborne, where he had resided so long that his general denomination -. xrae "Dad." In his youth, Mr Webb was a well 'known sportsman and athlete. Deceased, who was a contractor by trade, went to Gisborne in 1897. Almost, his last whisper to those a,t his death-bed was advice to keep on ''Scattering Seeds of Kindness," which motto accorded with his life's practice.

Williamson, for some time past Chief Inspector of tbet Post and Telegraph Department, on his retirement from the service on suxjeranuuation. In presenting Mr "Williamson with a silver teapot, coffee pot, and salver, the Secretary ot tho Department (Mr R. B. Morris) referred to the esteem in which that gentleman was held by his fellow-officeis, and to his long connection with the service, especially in the head office. He expressed the hope that Mr Williamson might long bo spared to enjoy his wellearned retirement. Mr 'Williamson ex pressed thanks for the valuable presents, and gave a brief resume of his official career, which commenced as i telegraph message boy -13 years ago.
